Now, the interim housing facility and the Men's Central Jail site are poised to serve as the centerpieces of a new "Restorative Justice Village" which could bring hundreds of units of interim and permanent supportive housing to a largely industrial zone on the fringe of Chinatown. However, a 2019 vote by the Board of Supervisors abandoned a $1.7-billion plan to replace the jail with a new facility geared towards mental health treatment, leaving the property open for redevelopment. The headstock of McCready’s ‘60 famously features a huge gouge resulting from a mis-timed stab at a speaker in the mid-1990s. Nothing’s gonna sound as good as that, but this one’s right next to it.” Stab In The Dark My 1960, the original one, is the best, I’m not gonna say that’s not the case. That’s important to me, because it’s real. I use it on six or seven or eight different songs on this tour. “George Webb, who works for us, helped me be very specific in picking out what it needed to look like, how the pickups needed to sound. “I felt confident that Fender did a lot of due diligence in getting back and forth with me,” McCready says. On tour right now, he’s playing Daughter with one of the new signature Strats in what is essentially the ultimate road-test, and he’s liking what he hears. “I wanted to get that sound of the out-of-phase pickup, the second position, for the rhythm part of it,’” McCready recalls. An almost supine rocker that plays Eddie Vedder’s vocal intensity off warm acoustics and loping chords, it remains one of Pearl Jam’s finest low-key moments. McCready recalls turning to a 335 for songs such as Animal - aka Even Flow if it hated you and wanted you to know about it - but it’s the tracklist’s next step, Daughter, that shows the developing relationship with his Strat in the best light. Pearl Jam responded to the scrutiny and pressure of a hit record by resetting a little, serving up a more abrasive sound that was only completely sure of itself here and there. began in 1993 the ‘60 was locked in, but very little else was. Image: Fenderīy the time work on their second album Vs. Mike McCready playing his signature Fender Stratocaster. It took a while to get there, playing a lot of shows, playing with a band, and playing on a lot of records, to create a style.” I think that those things got into my playing and it came out me. I talked about my early influences all the time in interviews back then. I was trying to emulate those guys in a lot of our songs, and as I was trying to emulate them I was coming up with my own style within that. “I was a giant fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix. “I was 25 when that record came out,” he recalls. The ‘60 entered his life at a time when he was malleable, quickly becoming a part of his creative language in a manner that moved beyond most artist-instrument relationships. But as it kept on rolling, McCready was still figuring out exactly what sort of player he wanted to be. Next to the rapid sprint to ubiquity enjoyed by Nirvana’s Nevermind the band’s 1991 debut LP, Ten, was a marathon runner that spent a couple of hundred weeks on the Billboard chart on its way to selling 13 million copies in the US alone. Inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan, he pulled it into his rotation just after Pearl Jam made the record that would break them into the grunge stratosphere. McCready’s relationship with the original instrument began back in 1992, when he came across what he believed to be a ‘59 Strat in Los Angeles (during the making of the Custom Shop model, Fender’s master builder Vincent Van Trigt discovered it to be a ‘60). I would move between them and go, ‘I like aspects of this one, but I don’t on this one, the pickups are good on this one, not on this one.’ We put all those together into one Frankenstein guitar.” Mike McCready playing his signature Fender Stratocaster. ![]() On the last tour over in Europe, we had three different models of it. ![]() ![]() “We’ve spent a lot of time going back and forth with Fender to go, ‘This thing has to be perfect – the neck’s gotta feel this way, the treble pickup has to be not too high-end-y, it has to sound as close to the 1960 as it can,’” he says.
![]() There’s no need to throw away prised bathroom accessories, but their organisation is critical. However, the ambience of the zen bathroom should have an overarching sense of tidiness. It is concerned with something entirely different. The most important basic considerations when creating the zen bathroom environment include the following. It follows that by thinking about the space holistically, Zen becomes much more attainable. Our connection with the world around us is only perceived through our senses. Zen philosophy aims to achieve insight into the nature of the mind and the world around us through the practice of daily rituals. That is sight, sound, touch, smell and taste at least four of these should be manageable. We recommend including as many of the five senses as possible within the zen bathroom. ![]() The zen bathroom aims to create the ideal conditions for achieving this state of mindfulness through a series of design choices. Even 5 minutes a day dedicated to quiet inner reflection can make a difference to our mental wellbeing. Zen recognises the privacy of the bathroom experience as a way of grabbing a moment in the day for ourselves. With regard to how the principles of Zen affect interior design generally, and bathroom design specifically, it’s all about creating the right mood and ambience for mindfulness. The practise of Zen is synonymous with meditation, the pursuit of insight into both ourselves and the world around us. Zen developed as a philosophy in its own right as it spread across Asia during an era that we in Europe refer to as the Dark Ages. The origins of Zen can be traced back to the Buddhist religion that emerged in China over a thousand years ago. Nowadays, Zen is a catch-all term that combines Eastern and Western cultural influences. What is Zen, and in what ways does it influence bathroom design? The om symbol is composed of three Sanskrit letters and represents three sounds (a, u and m), which when combined are considered a sacred sound. The word swastika means "good fortune" or "being happy" in Sanskrit, and the symbol represents good luck. There are two primary symbols associated with Hinduism, the om and the swastika. At the very least, keep a microphone windscreen in your kit should conditions change. It’s usually best to be prepared, though. In this example, the magical element is the fire being caused by the intensity of a womans passion, which is not a realistic cause-and-effect relationship. It's doing so with Frame Generation, and based on the efficacy of Ray Reconstruction so far, I'd say AMD would do well to find a way to ape this one, too. Magical realism often involves fantastical or magical elements that are presented in a matter-of-fact way and are seamlessly integrated into the storys setting and characters. Sure, the effect can still be subtle, but why wouldn't you?Īt this point AMD must be cursing Nvidia for consistently coming up with new, effective graphics features that it has to then go ahead and figure out a way to copy. Field of Dreams (1989) PG 107 min Drama, Family, Fantasy 7. The extra level of detail is tangible-if you know where to look-and it's effectively free in performance terms, sometimes better than free. Like Frame Generation, Nvidia has unlinked Ray Reconstruction from DLSS, but if you're using ray tracing in any form, in any compatible game, based on my experience, flip that damned switch. That makes Ray Reconstruction an absolute must for high-end GPUs running ray tracing. the World might not immediately come to mind as a typical example of magical realism, it most definitely can be considered as such. But with Ray Reconstruction enabled that leapt up to 103 fps simply from ditching that denoising step. While Edgar Wright’s loveable Scott Pilgrim vs. On Overdrive, with the path tracing tech demo at 4K, and with DLSS set to Quality and Frame Generation set on, I was getting 69 fps on average. With that step gone, I was seeing a serious boost in performance with the RTX 4090 I was using to test the feature. Where the path tracing mode of the game needs a lot of GPU resources, it utilises a lot of denoisers in the pipeline. ![]() Ray Reconstruction, while still part of DLSS, is not necessarily about increasing performance, but it certainly does at the high-end. The temporal nature of denoising can add in weird graphical effects and ghosting, and then the final blending stage can smear away detail from a scene. That's how you get the cleaner, not-so-speckly final image in something like Cyberpunk 2077.īut it's still just another layer of fakery, with Nvidia itself calling this accumulation of pixels in a temporal fashion across multiple frames "stealing rays from the past." That's fine for a static image, where that accumulation of pixels will be more or less the same from one moment to the next, but in motion is where it falls down. First, they track and group pixels temporally across multiple frames, essentially allowing for more samples, then they use neighbouring pixels from these representative samples, and finally interpolate from them, essentially blending them together. These so-called hand-tuned denoisers use two different methods to fill in the blanks. So, from there it's the job of the denoisers to fill in the missing pixels that didn't result from the firing of those few specific light rays. The final blending stage can smear away detail from a scene.īut this noisy image is far from what you want the final look of your game to be. |
